The Signs of Jonah: The Core Revelation of Jesus Christ

We usually think of Jonah as the “whale guy”—the prophet who took a wrong turn and ended up as fish food. It’s a great Sunday school story, but when Jesus was confronted by the smartest religious minds of His day, He pointed back to Jonah and said something that should stop us in our tracks.

He told them they wouldn’t get a flashy miracle or a sky-writing display. The only sign they were getting was the Sign of Jonah.

Why Jonah? Of all the prophets, all the miracles, and all the fire-from-heaven moments in the Old Testament, why did Jesus stake His entire identity on a man who tried to run away from God?

There is a pattern hidden in the belly of that fish. It’s a pattern that bridges the gap between a runaway prophet in the depths of the sea and a Savior on a hill called Calvary.
